Puncture Number 2! Grrrr!

At work this time – tire was as flat as a pancake when I went to leave at – ahem – 5pm…

Bicycle rescue in the shape of Lorraine appeared with the car in about 20 mins though so got home easily enough.

I checked for the cause of the first one in the tire but couldn’t find anything so decided to risk another tube. Punctures in exactly the same place on the tubes so I’m just binning the tire (which was getting thin anyway). Gives me plenty of practice with the tire levers though.

Trip to Edinburgh Bicycle tomorrow to pick up some new black hoops.

No bicycle today

The weather is abysmal today so I am on the bus. The wind was blowing a gale and the rain seemed to be battering against the window off and on for most of last night. A day to stay at home in bed I reckon. Unfortunately work beckoned so here I am!

It’s still a struggle to get up for work after two weeks off, seems to be getting more so as the week progresses. Roll on the weekend so I might be able to get back to normal.

En-suite is still in progress. Nearly manage to get the WC reattached last night but the tiles must be thicker than before as the water feed in doesn’t quite fit as snug as it should. Some jiggery pokery required there methinks.

Enough already – backgammon to catch up on during lunch.

Blizzards in Edinburgh!

For the first time in ages I didn’t cycle to work and got the bus instead. It had been blowing a gale (I nearly put gail – thats a completely different article for a completely different website!!!) through the night but looked quite bright when I finally dragged myself out of bed and out of the front door. Should I shouldn’t I cycle??? I had made up my mind already that it was too wet and windy but the lack of rain tempted me.

blizzard.jpgBoy was I glad I got the bus – when it reached Roseburn the heavens opened and it bucketed down for the next 30 minutes or so. Then the blizzard came(the pic is just for effect. The snow didn’t even lie) – sleety snow blowing about at umpteen mph (thats loadsa kph for our metric readers)

Hopefully be dry enough to get to and from the bus tonight.

Miss being on the bicycle though :(

I can’t imagine absolutely having to cycle in terrible weather but I guess Mark might on his Round the World Quest

What does it all mean

I’m on a training course this week and here are just two extracts from the workbooks.

Expressing grouped aggregates with derived tables allows ASE to “push down” the group predicates

ASE does NOT guarantee repeatable reads on non-deterministic, non-materialized (virtual) computed columns

I should hopefully be able to explain what they mean….

Lack of updates!

This is an update for the sake of it…

I’ve been pretty busy doing other things so haven’t had much time for posting here and won’t have for the next week or so. More on that once its up and running…

I promise to post more stories from the honeymoon although that seems so long ago now I’ve been back at work a few weeks and the wind is blowing the rain against the windows.

Keep checking back as I promise to add some more this weekend.

The Don's stag

Shortly off to meet up with the Don’s bro and gang to head up to Aberdeen for a weekend (well Saturday) of stag activities. Re-living student days for some by staying at the Hillhead halls of residence for Aberdeen Uni.

Can’t remember what is planned for tomorrow other than it costing £75 quid + £10 bus. Should be fun though. Digs are cheap at £13.50 a night – bit more budget than our hotels in the States for our honeymoon which is only a couple of weeks away now!!!

I'm the best I am

No I’m not bragging dear reader, surely you know me better than that.

I’ve been officially offered (and accepted) the post of best man at Paul and Sandie wedding in December!!!

We all know they are doing things a bit different so I’ll need to check and make sure I find out exactly what my duties are other than looking after the rings on the day and making sure Paul doesn’t get toooo p1shed on his stag do.

Cheers for giving me the honour of being involved in your big day Paul and Sandie.

Web Calendars

For several years I have organised my diary through a webcalendar on my own webspace. I have recently discovered Google Calendar and thought I would give it a plug here as it is extremely usable.
Migrating from webcalendar was a simple as exporting to ICal format, saving it to disk and then importing it into Google Calendar.
It has a really easy to use interface, for instance.
Bringing up the ‘quick add’ box I can type in
Meet Lorraine at 7pm Friday
and it will insert an entry called Meet Lorraine for this friday at 7pm.
Repeating appointments, email or SMS reminders are in there too, along with the ability to invite other users to meetings (not tried this yet)

The only issue is if I’m not at a computer connected to the net and someone asks me what I’m doing next friday I don’t have a clue!

RGB vs Composite

I’ve been playing my cheap X-box (not 360) on the odd occasion for a month or so now and was not that impressed with the clarity of the graphics on my 32″ widescreen TV so I bought a high def Scart cable.
Didn’t seem to make any difference though – plugged in through the digibox, or directly in to the top of two scart sockets.
Hang on a moment I thought – what is the issue here.

So I downloaded the manual for my TV and it turns out that only the lower of the Scart sockets is RGB enabled (the one the digibox plugs into)

Yippee – plugging the x-box in there displays crystal clear images – what a difference!

Off to find a RGB enabled Scart switch now…

Cor blimey guv'nor it ain't half hot!

I’m enjoying the sites and smells of London this week whilst on a course and it just happens to be the hottest July on record!

Struggling to stay cool in a classroom of 30 folk, 15 computers, a server and two hefty projectors through the day. And then at night I have a choice of either leaving the window shut to have a quiet but roasting night or to leave it open for a noisy and only slightly less roasting night.

Consolation is that the flat is only 5 minutes walk from the course and 10 minutes walk from the station so very handy.

Thanks goodness the train strike for Friday has been averted as I’m not sure what I would have done.
