New Star Trek Rocks!

After all the hype, the new Star Trek Movie was fantastic! Lived up to the hype and more.

Wish I had seen it in America as there were several parts in the movie that I wanted to cheer or clap – seeing Enterprise for the first time, old Spock, the ‘boldy go’ speech, the old theme tune.

Seeing a re-envisioning of the old characters and their relationships with new actors was really well done by JJ Abrams (the dude who does Lost).

Snakes on a Plane

Train journey back from sunny Scarboro found me with some time on my hands and space on a table to watch Snakes on a Plane.

Disaster movie with a twist would be my best take on it. Obviously the clue is in the title, but why they are there and whay they do once they are there is the story…

Samuel L Jackson gets all the best lines, my favourite of which (and least offensive) is

“Oh Great. Snakes on crack”

A must see – you will laugh and grimace – quite often at the same time.

Cloverfield…

Godzilla type monster movie set in the stereotypical monster movie capital – Manhattan.

But this time it’s all seen through the eyes, or rather camera of one man as he starts off filming a party and then him and his friends efforts to save the main man’s unrequited love.

At times the shaky cams makes you feel a bit queasy, but it was too big expected since the cinema actually had a notice on the cinema door warning viewers to expect motion sickness “like being on a rollercoaster”

It worked really well though – a really typical monster flick, but seen through a participant’s eyes rather than contrived angles. The first 20 minutes of the film were a normal pyt American movie about some dude fancying his long term pal but then not knowing how to leave for Japan without saying goodbye or ‘I Love You’.

Well worth a look – gripping – scary – and an extremely original take on a standard genre.

27->28 Tuesday and Wednesday

That’s it – the last two days are over and we’ve survived the No TV regime for the whole of February.

There was no desire to stay up until midnight and watch stuff, or to get up and watch breakfast TV for the first time in a month which was good.

Saw Hot Fuzz with the Paul’s last night which was most enjoyable – if a bit gross at times. In fact it was the funniest thing I’d seen in a long time.

I’ve got some Top Gears to catch up on tonight while Lorraine is working so that’ll be the first ‘TV’ – non DVD movie stuff since January!

Day 2

Sat at the table and had brekkie together this morning – very convivial.

Seem to have the need for some noise to be on in the background though. Radio 1 again this morning – although Lorraine says she is listening to Radio 4 these days!

Out to Iggs for dinner tonight – maybe end up going out every night so TV isn’t an option :)

Headed to the cinema to see Babel which was okay – apparently Cinema and our Amazon DVD rentals don’t count for the “not watching” TV regime…

50% good movies…

A double bill of short cycling themed movies at the filmhouse on Saturday saw us watching Red Light Go, a film about cycle couriers in New York who get their kicks with Alleycat races through rush hour traffic. The second showing was an episode of a dutch sitcom (the com bit being used very loosely) about a cycle courier firm in Amsterdam. It was rubbish…

Red Light Go fortunately was a well made documentary that was amusing and the audience being made up of mainly cyclists emphasized with all the close calls through mad New York traffic.

More Star Wars

Well Luke, Linda, Paul and me headed to see Star Wars Episode III again last night.

For me it was the 4th time! 2nd time round for the rest.

Still as good although I was feeling a bit tired so think I probably nodded off in the mushy bits…

Can’t wait for it to come out on DVD
