World Record follow up

I was googling to see if Mark’s World Record was mentioned anywhere else and came across the official Guinness announcements for the week of 16th to 22nd February 2008.

Amongst them all is Mark Beaumont of course, but see what other weird records were broken that week.

Farthest ear sling-shot”

Largest biryani”

Tallest stack of pancakes”

Bizarre isn’t it that something as vast as “Fastest circumnavigation by bicycle, true” sits amongst these other odd things.

Welcome home Mark!

Saturday evening we were lucky enough to be invited to Mark Beaumont’s “non-press” homecoming in the Radisson in Glasgow. Was good to see him for the first time in more than 6 months – other than looking a bit more tanned, sporting a beard, and needing a bit of a haircut he didn’t seem that different.

Was good to meet some more of the team that I’ve been in touch with but never met – and also to get a wee mention as the webmaster for the Guinness World Record and techie help for Una “Base Camp” Beaumont. Just a question of time to see what happens from here.

Blimey it’s windy out there

My usual bicycle journey time home from work is about 14 minutes but if I really push it I can get sub 12 minutes.

Tonight is took 21 minutes. Head wind all the way keeping me below 10mph in places.

Was knackered by the time I got home. Slow considering a few of us cycled 10 miles in 40 minutes on Saturday morning!

Mark has finished!

194 days and 8 hours by my reckoning is all it took Mark Beaumont to cycle out of Paris in a sort of Easterly direction and cycle back into Paris from the west. 18,400 miles or so in between.

Still awaiting official confirmation but that should break the world record by a massive 81 days and a bit.

You can check out his own website at www.pedallingaround.com or the bbc one at www.bbc.co.uk/pedallingaround

What a great website pedallingaround.com is eh? All done by your truly for nothing!

Victory for Pentland Ladies

Mum and two other teams from Pentland Ladies won the Midlothian Province Bonspiel – the first ladies team to win it in a long, long time.

Click on any of the pics below to see bigger images.

The sport was curling by the way – I’ll fill out more details here if mum kindly supplies them

From Mum -3 teams from Pentland Ladies’ Curling Club played in the Midlothian Province Bonspiel.
84 teams of ladies, men and mixed played in the competition throughout the
day.
This is the first time that a ladies’ club has ever won this competition!

Cloverfield…

Godzilla type monster movie set in the stereotypical monster movie capital – Manhattan.

But this time it’s all seen through the eyes, or rather camera of one man as he starts off filming a party and then him and his friends efforts to save the main man’s unrequited love.

At times the shaky cams makes you feel a bit queasy, but it was too big expected since the cinema actually had a notice on the cinema door warning viewers to expect motion sickness “like being on a rollercoaster”

It worked really well though – a really typical monster flick, but seen through a participant’s eyes rather than contrived angles. The first 20 minutes of the film were a normal pyt American movie about some dude fancying his long term pal but then not knowing how to leave for Japan without saying goodbye or ‘I Love You’.

Well worth a look – gripping – scary – and an extremely original take on a standard genre.
